Indianapolis Men’s Chorus Joins Butler Arts Collaborative
A new chapter is beginning for the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus.
Today, IMC announced that it has joined the Butler Arts Collaborative, establishing a new organizational and rehearsal home in Lilly Hall at Butler University.
Beginning with our 37th season, Lilly Hall will serve as the center of IMC’s regular administrative and rehearsal activities. Our offices have moved to Butler, our singers are now rehearsing on campus, and IMC is becoming part of a larger community of artists, educators, students and arts organizations.
But this move is about much more than having a new place to rehearse.
A home for the organization we’ve become
Just a few years ago, the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus numbered approximately 50 singers. Today, more than 100 singers are part of IMC.
Along the way, our performances have become more ambitious, our community partnerships have expanded, our audiences have grown, and the organization behind everything you see onstage has grown with them.
Joining the Butler Arts Collaborative gives IMC the space and infrastructure to support that growth while opening the door to something equally important: relationships.
Being part of the Collaborative creates opportunities to connect with Butler students and faculty, work alongside other arts organizations, share resources, and explore new artistic and educational collaborations.
Some of the possibilities are already easy to imagine. Others will emerge simply because artists, students, educators and organizations are now sharing a campus and getting to know one another.
There is something especially meaningful about this moment when viewed through IMC’s history.
In 1990, a small group of folks came together in Indianapolis to create a place where gay men and others could make music, find community and have their voices heard.
Nearly four decades later, IMC has grown into one of Central Indiana’s largest LGBTQ+ performing arts organizations.
The world around us has changed tremendously during those years. So has IMC. But the belief at the heart of the organization remains: music can bring people together, create connection and build community.
Our Next Chapter
Thirty-seven seasons after those first singers came together, we find ourselves looking both backward and forward.
We are grateful for every singer, audience member, donor, volunteer, alumnus, community partner and friend who helped build the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus into the organization it is today. And we are deeply grateful to Butler University for welcoming IMC into its community.
There is much more ahead.
