A National Milestone for IMC and for Indianapolis
A National Milestone for IMC and for Indianapolis
For 36 years, this community has been building something strong.
From the singers who founded the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus with courage and vision, to the generations who followed, giving their time, talent, and belief, IMC has grown season by season, step by step. Audiences kept showing up. Donors invested in the mission. Leaders made thoughtful decisions. Partnerships deepened. The foundation was laid carefully over decades.
That long-term effort has led to an important milestone: IMC is now recognized as one of the 24 largest choruses within GALA Choruses, the international association of LGBTQ+ choruses.
That distinction places the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus among the top tier of LGBTQ choruses in North America.
And it means something important for our city.
It means Indianapolis is home to one of the country’s leading LGBTQ choral organizations, operating at a scale seen in only a few cities nationwide. IMC is a professionally led chorus built by volunteers and sustained by a community that believes in the power of music and visibility.
This moment belongs to the people who built it over 36 years.
There were seasons of growth. Seasons of rebuilding. Seasons of transition. Through all of it, the chorus kept moving forward. Each generation strengthened the organization artistically, structurally, and financially.
In recent years, that steady work has accelerated. Concerts are reaching more people. Partnerships are expanding. We are performing in larger venues and stepping into more visible civic spaces. The momentum we are experiencing today rests on decades of commitment.
Being in this national cohort reflects more than scale. It reflects capacity.
It means IMC has the stability to plan ahead and the strength to pursue bold artistic work. It gives us the ability to elevate production, collaborate at a higher level, and create performances that resonate beyond the stage.
It also allows us to reduce barriers for participation. We want more singers to find community here. We want access to be real. Growth gives us the flexibility to invest in inclusion and welcome more voices.
And it strengthens our civic presence. When IMC steps onto a stage, whether in a performance hall, a park, or at a Pacers game, we do so as one of the leading LGBTQ choral organizations in the country. That visibility reflects not only on the chorus, but on Indianapolis itself.
